Travis Bowlin was born into a family of true music lovers, not players, but real listeners. From Rock 'n Roll to Southern Gospel, Motown to Country, he listened to a wide range of Roots music...giving him the foundation for his powerful soul, rocky, but smooth blues voice. He grew up with struggles like most people do...knowing heartache & happiness, and those are the words that come out in his music.

All Carr & The Strong Arm + Luke Brennan (ex-Big Smoke)

A couple of years back Al released an EP with help from some old band mates and friends. It was engineered by Clinton Kraus (Paul Dempsey, The Peep Tempel) andfeatured some great musicians lending a hand like Davey Lane (You Am I) and Louis Macklin (Jet, 67 Special).

The EP was well received and a few folk seemed to like it…

‘The EP, six tracks of alt-country rock possesses a real late night barroom feel – it sounds clean but rustic at the same time…. Macklin’s keys end up providing a thread through the recording, making one imagine Carr and company recording this EP late at night with whiskey glasses atop of pianos and amps….. his voice sounds like the bastard child of Mick Jagger and the Go-Betweens Robert Forster’ – Garry Westmore, Beat Magazine

Vocally, Carr scowls, reaches a crescendo, pulls the reins back when needed and never overplays his hand/voice/intention…. There’s plenty here to suggest that a full-length record would sit rather nicely, and proudly, among Melbourne’s roots elite when, and if, the chap takes the next step. – Nick Argyriou, unpaved.com.au, Rhythms Magazine

During late 2016 Al got the band back together and began rehearsing a new batch of tunes. The material sounded looser and louder than the previous EP and a plan was hatched to get the songs recorded as soon as possible. Clinton Kraus put his hand up to engineer, produce and mix the album again and over a 6 month period the songs were recorded intermittently above a bar in North Melbourne.

The resulting album Gutter Truth comprises nine songs ranging from the raucous attention grabbing opener (Gutter Truth), to humorous reflections on struggling to be a full time stay at home Dad (Stay At Home Daddy Blues), to more narrative driven story telling (First Love, Will the Light Start Staring Down).

Melbourne Band Jeanie bring a new brand of Alt country / pop music to the scene Featuring Singer/Songwriter
Aaron D’Arcy on Vocals/guitar and a whole lot of special guests including TV Presenter Olivia Phyland.

Performing and music have always been the focus of Aaron’s work. Aaron had worked as a Music Composer, Producer and Audio Engineer for various Music and TV productions including many years writing for Lonely Planet.

The storytelling style of their EP Crazy as well as male and female vocals with strong guitar accompaniment is a timeless combination –   The pair combines effortlessly, their voices as one, complimenting each other over D’Arcy’s guitar, pulling off the necessary country lament while keeping to the melodic hookiness vital to good pop music. Crazy sees them pull this together nicely, the results strong and confident, while retaining a playfulness often missing in music today.

Never Mind the Warp'd Tour with Guitar Wolf + 30 bands!

Over 30 bands across 3 stages!

2017 is an exciting year for the Nevermind The Warp'd Tour Festival. This is the 5th year of the Festival, with a massive line up including Guitar Wolf from Japan, a new venue for Melbourne, as well as a second event in Brisbane and it is also going to be the last ever Nevermind the Warp'd Tour Festival.

The festival started in 2013 as a joke in backlash to an email from the organiser of the Australian Vans Warped Tour. A person who was considered one of the most influential people in Australian music at the time told some local musicians they were "fucking nobodies" and explained that unless an Australian band could bring 400 to a show on their own they basically weren't worth his time. It was then decided to show him what nobodies can do and over that past 4 years, that Nobodies Do It Better!

Over the years the festival has featured some killer bands from across Australia and this year is no exception. So get your ticket early so you don't miss out, get your fanciest party shoes dusted off and get to the Retreat Hotel, Saturday December 2nd for the 5th and last ever Nevermind the Warp'd Tour Festival!

30 Bands accross 3 stages including: Guitar Wolf (Jap) - No Idea - Strawberry Fist Cake - Beyond Contempt - Ferocious Chode - Shadow League - Australian Kingswood Factory - Jerkbeast - Stoned To Death & heaps more to be announced.

Coda Chroma
Dec

9:30 PM21:30

Coda Chroma

CodaChroma is the Space-Folk Alt-Pop union of songsmith Kate Lucas and aural architect Damien Charles. These musical magpies collect shiny baubles of sound, threading them in and around chimerical lyrics, curious harmony and shrewd production.

Kate grew up at the foot of the Great Dividing Range in picturesque Gippsland, Victoria, while Damien is from the free-loving, humid peaks of Titirangi, Auckland. Both of them began playing guitar as youngsters, and they flourished on a steady diet of The Beatles and Beethoven.

As they grew up their tastes diversified and their skills became more specialised. Kate studied improvised and contemporary music at a tertiary level for many years and became a proficient jazz singer and guitarist, playing in various ensembles. She fell into the wondrous labyrinth that is songwriting and formed the band Telltale, releasing a self-titled EP in 2011.

Damien delved into music production when he opened Ground Zero recording studio in Auckland and absorbed himself in the disparate worlds of Dub/Electronica and Grunge/Punk. His main focus for a stretch was to produce, manage, write and perform for preeminent Melbourne dub outfit The Red Eyes. He produced and engineered two studio albums with the Red Eyes, and has worked on releases with Grammy Award winning/nominated acts Gotye and Hiatus Kaiyote, among many others.

My Nightingale + Rosie Burgess Trio

My Nightingale

My Nightingale are releasing their debut EP “Folk Tales” with a national tour and will be performing at The Retreat Hotel. We will be supported by awesome Melbourne outfit Rosie Burgess Trio

Featuring the incredibly versatile vocals and songs of award-winning songstress Elly Hoyt, playing guitar and ukelele; My Nightingale explore the natural world and the themes that run through life's experience. Elly is joined by Rebecca Karlen on violin, Beck Flatt on drums and Helen Svoboda on double bass.

With diverse musical backgrounds and stories, these talented musicians and singers bring to the stage soul soothing tunes with luscious vocal harmonies, layers of beautiful strings and groovy folk rhythms.

My Nightingale recently joined the line-up of the Queensland Music Festival's "Immersion" series with Katie Noonan, Deborah Conway, All Our Exes Live in Texas, Montaigne and others. They have performed at Palm Creek Folk Festival, Sunshine Coast Ukelele Festival, the Brisbane City Hall Concert Series and City Sounds Concerts.

Rosie Burgess Trio

Running a grassroots independent record label, touring nationally, recording a new album and working on two musical projects might seem a lot to some, but to Rosie Burgess being busily up to her ears in the music scene comes as naturally as breathing.

With the award of a Victoria Rocks Touring Grant in Jan 2008 having propelled her around Australia on national tour, Rosie Burgess has emerged onto the Australian music scene to firmly secure a place for herself and her unique brand of urban folkroots music. Playing straight from the heart, Burgess consistently shows us why she is being called "one of our country's best rising stars" [Coastfest 2008, NSW].

The release of her album, Humble Pie [MGM/PSR], last year saw Burgess's music hit the national stage, and with radio showing great support for the album, especially Triple J, it has been an exciting time for this passionate musician. With her the release of her highly anticipated, brand new studio album [MGM / PSR], "wait for the World", Burgess is set to raise the bar again.

"When you have heard Rosie perform, you're sure to be tongue-tied trying to tell people how good she is..." says Dave Ritter, organiser of the Bruthen Festival of Blues and Arts.

At festivals and major venues across Australia, Burgess has had the pleasure of playing along side some of Australia's finest musicians, including Ash Grunwald, Mia Dyson, Bill Chambers, Chris Wilson, Deborah Conway and Blue King Brown. With her quirky and original tunes, Rosie Burgess is captivating audiences wherever she goes. She brings both her love of music, and her engaging sense of humor to the stage, securing a growing fan base of acoustic roots and folk lovers around the globe. Currently playing in a trio featuring Sam Lohs, from Fruit, on drums and Tim Bennett on bass, this is a performance not to be missed!

"Burgess gave off more energy than an illegally sparked firecracker. Her band was awesome, the violin was go-faster red, and the polka she finished on was enough to make the artists preceding her eat humble pie" - Donne Restom, Drum Media, Sydney, June 2008.
