MARZ

Smokey and evocative, MARZs voice carries an emotional weight which elevates listeners to a place of escape and serenity but with visceral delivery.

With music dripping in white hot urgency, MARZ delivers his first single, The Masters Slave. Summoning the energy and dark secrets of the inner city with Australian rock influences harking back to the 70s and 80s, MARZs music is exciting and dangerous. Delivering a taut, focused and sinewy rock sound devoid of excess, MARZ draws on rock royalty like The Angels and AC/DC but tempers this with melodic flourishes harking back to the masters of 60s folk and with Jeff Buckley-esque vocal comparison. Rock is back. MARZ is leading the charge.

Paul Andrew Carey

Paul will be bringing his soulful and evocative music, stories and performance to the Retreat Hotel Front Bar, Saturday 26th May, 5 - 7 p.m, accompanied by Leo Kahans on Viola, Violin, and Mandolin.

Considered by many of his peers and long term devotees to be a unique and gifted songwriter, Paul has a way with words and melody that can be heartbreaking and insightful, let alone raw and oddly to the point. He has written and performed for over 25 years.  He is a multiple award winning songwriter capable of tender yet vivacious performance with songs that are both refined in his craft yet raw in their expression.

His sound is a blend of Country, Soul, Folk, Roots, and Story, which is deeply rooted in tradition, though usually comes from a little left of center in a way that doesn't always play by the rules.

D.G. Gray & Co

After years of touring Australia with The Good Ship, Daz Gray decided to ditch this whole music career malarkey, pull up stumps to Melbourne and live the life of the local suburban hipster. But, as much as he tried, the songs kept coming and he just couldn't tell the difference between single origin coffee and the $1 Seven Eleven ones.

It was time to get back on the metaphorical horse and with the help of Jon May on Drums (Clap Hands), Michael Downes on Bass (Useless Spacemen) and Kat Ogilvie on Accordion (Rich Davies & The Low Road), D.G. Gray & Co. were born.

Take a trip out to where upbeat story songs about country hotels, jilted lovers and greyhound racing meet inner city Melbourne at The Retreat on Saturday, 9th June from 5pm for a cruisey afternoon of songs, beers and, let's be honest, probably a bloody massive Parma or two. See you at the front bar!

Their live performance energy on stage combined with hypnotic melodies and infectious rhythms keep crowds coming back. The song choices are as eclectic as the members that write them which gives the band it’s unique sound and would best be described as Americana. Influenced by Old Timey Hillbilly, Bluegrass, alternative Country, Traditional Rockabilly with hints of the classic vocal groups of the 60’s and even a twist of pop vibes…….yep, that’s The Rechords.

Last Leaves

Formed from the scattered remains of The Lucksmiths, Last Leaves combine songwriter Marty Donald’s lyrical sleight-of-hand with the jangle and racket of his former band mates Louis Richter and Mark Monnone, and drummer Noah Symons of Great Earthquake fame. In late-2017, Last Leaves released their debut album Other Towns Than Ours to a resounding chorus of hurrahs.

Denim Owl is the solo pop project of Melbourne musician Janita Foley. Her floaty ballads present a blend of 80s synth pads, downtempo drums and heartfelt vocals that fuse to create familiar yet mystical songscapes. Releases have included three well liked EPs (available on Bandcamp) with a fourth being honed in the live set, along with as always lots of eyebrow raising comedy!

Sparkly Bear is your typical Melbourne jangle band, only with more jangle. The love child of Extreme Wheeze and his first 12-string, by way of Big Star and George Harrison. Featuring the next Zakk Wylde on guitar plus members of Mote. Pop hooks to whistle while you wait for the tram and or push your pram.

Grizzlee Train

Grizzlee Train

It’s a new take on old standards. At the core of Grizzlee Train is the wailing of vintage blues rock, but it’s drenched with a hefty modern vigour which gives the band a sound that is all their own. Born & raised on a diet of Creedence & Led Zeppelin, it’s no secret that the dynamic two-piece draw heavily from a time well before their own. But it’s the injection of pure live energy which sets them apart and grants them a place among the world’s modern bluesmen. Armed with a guitar, some drums and a rusty tour van, Brandon Dodd and Josh Dufficy have taken their music from Australia’s Central Coast to audiences all over the world. They are one of the nation’s most road-worn bands, with an arsenal of EPs and international tours behind them.

Support from Annabelle Kay.
